There’s nothing better on a hot day than an icy glass of lemonade. Your friends will be very impressed if you make it fresh. Be sure to start with a LOT of lemons.
Here’s my method of making a quart of fresh lemonade. I like it pretty tart and strong, but you can adjust with more sugar or fewer lemons if you like it sweeter or less sour; or dilute further if you like it less strong. At least one of your lemons should be unwaxed (as an organic one is) so you can infuse the flavor of the tasty peel.
- Take half a cup of sugar and two cups of water.
- Stir till the sugar is dissolved (this will happen pretty quickly; there’s no need to make a simple syrup by heating, though you can if you want
- Add half a cup of lemon juice and stir. Depending on the size of the lemons, this could be from 4 to 8 lemons, approximately.
- Cut half or more of the unwaxed lemon into thin slices, then cut the slices in half crosswise and add to your lemonade.
- Fill the quart with water and taste to see if it’s to your liking. Remember, you’re serving it over ice, which will dilute it, so it’s best to be a little strong. You can always dilute each glass to taste if you like.
- Chill in the refrigerator and serve in glasses filled with ice cubes, putting a slice of the lemon in each glass.
A quick glass of lemonade:
Stir 2 teaspoons of sugar in 3/4 cup of water until the sugar is dissolved. Add lemon juice– from half a lemon or a whole lemon–to taste.
